What's the deal with Hello Kitty?

First let me start off by saying that I'm not a big Hello Kitty fan, I just don't quite understand the appeal of the little cat. Nothing against those who just go ga-ga over her, but it just seems a little strange to me.

I do have a question though regarding the Hello Kitty products. I've always considered her to be aimed at little girls, and that older girls started liking her because she was trendy. As a result you can find adult sizes for Hello Kitty shirts, socks... and panties. Yes, panties. I was in a department store a few days ago and saw something that made me do a double-take; a Hello Kitty thong. Heck, I even saw a Hello Kitty g-sting.

Here's the thing though, I wasn't in the women's section, I was walking through the girls section!! Yes, they make racy Hello Kitty undies for little girls. Don't believe me? I happen to have a phone with a camera in it:

These were a small size, about what a 10-yr old girl would wear. So tell me, WHY?!

That's impressively bizarre. Disturbing, even. I tend to scoff at claims that Barbie's wardrobe or the Spcie Girls are "sexualizing" our kids (as though nobody ever knew there was such a thing until puberty hit), but this seems . . . a trifle high in the "ick" factor.
